Portable Tower Assembly
Finding a suitable site for the tower
The tower should be situated at least 30 metres from objects that may effect the airflow such a buildings or trees. If the weather station will be above these obstructions this distance can be reduced to 10 metres. It is best not to mount the station above artificial surfaces such as concrete as this will effect temperature and humidity readings. Ensure that no object can shadow the light sensor. When considering a site, remember to consider the height of the sun at mid winter.
The portable tower consists of:
- 3 x 1m tube sections
- 3 x guy wires assemblies
- 3 x guy wire attachment pegs
- 1 x tower foot with pegs
- 1 x guy wire top stay
Assembly of the tower:
- screw the three 1m tube sections together (making sure that the sections are properly aligned to avoid cross threading the sections.
- bolt the guy wire top stay approx 400mm from the top of the tower
- attach guy wires to guy wire top stay
- position the tower foot plate but don't peg it down yet
- mark the position of the 3 guy wire attachment pegs 2m from the base plate and 120 degrees apart
- drive the three 3 guy wire attachment pegs into the ground sloping away from the proposed tower position by 30 degrees
- attach the turn buckle end of two of the guy wires to the ground with the pegs
- position the bottom of the tower into the foot plate, with the tower lying equidistant between two of the pegs with their guy wires attached
- Lift the top end of the tower to working height and attach the weather station with the brackets provided
- lift the top end of the tower until it is at 45 degrees
- pull the tower up the rest of the way using the remaining guy wire
- attach the remaining guy wire to its peg
- use the turn buckles to adjust the tension on the guy wires and make the tower stand perpendicular
- check with a spirit level and re tension guy or adjust base position if necessary
- peg down the base
